YCH works with several industry experts, each supporting different levers of our Green Transition Plan – from renewable energy to low-emission vehicles.
YCH’s partnership with Tuas Power is one such collaboration with like-minded stakeholders who share our vision and support our journey towards Net Zero.
YCH has been a long-time customer and partner of Tuas Power, a leading power generation company in Singapore, for electricity supply at our headquarters and other facilities in Singapore. Tuas Power is one of the few electricity retailers offering low-emission grid power options, and since 2024, YCH has been purchasing biomass-derived renewable energy on a monthly basis under an energy retail contract.
In late 2025, Tuas Power announced its intention to transit one of its co-fired plants to a 100% biomass plant by 2028, positioning it as Singapore’s largest green steam and power cogeneration facility.
This represents a major milestone in Singapore’s energy transition, aligning with national objectives under the Singapore Green Plan to strengthen energy security, grid stability, and affordability, while delivering broader benefits for electricity consumers nationwide.
The plant currently operates on a coal-biomass co-firing model, with a fuel mix of approximately 70% coal and 30% biomass. Under the planned transition, Tuas Power will progressively phase out coal and ramp up renewable biomass capacity to maintain grid stability and reliable electricity supply.
This transition is achieved through the use of renewable biomass fuels. These include imported wood pellets and palm kernel shells (“PKS”) from Southeast Asian countries such as Indonesia and Malaysia, as well as domestic wood waste in the form of locally sourced wood chips derived from horticultural activities and discarded pallets in Singapore. Through its procurement approach, Tuas Power is supporting the development of a more sustainable, circular model for sourcing biomass fuels used in energy generation. For YCH, this provides greater confidence in the sustainability values of our partner, extending beyond Scope 2 to Scope 3 GHG emissions considerations to support broader ecological outcomes, responsible resource use, and long-term resilience across the energy value chain.
Responsible and sustainable growth is not an individual endeavour; it requires the close collaboration of multiple stakeholders. This announcement came at a critical time for businesses like YCH seeking to incorporate a greater share of renewable energy into their energy mix – particularly options that do not require significant capital expenditure.
The media briefing also served as an opportune platform to demonstrate our support for credible actions to reduce emissions, reinforce its decarbonisation goals, and engage in dialogue with industry leaders from a wide range of sectors, from telecommunications to infrastructure. The panel featured speakers from companies such as StarHub, ABB Singapore, and Digital Realty. The company representatives exchanged ideas, shared experiences, and collectively explored practical strategies to achieve sustainable outcomes.
In particular, Sunil highlighted how Tuas Power continues to support YCH in staying on track towards its Net-Zero goals sharing how the partnership paved the way for an accessible renewable energy source early in YCH’s sustainability journey and how Tuas Power’s ongoing transition will continue to provide YCH with a scalable renewable energy solution that supports long-term decarbonisation while maintaining service reliability.
Renewable energy is one of YCH’s key decarbonisation levers under its Green Transition Plan towards achieving Net Zero. Partners such as Tuas Power play a vital role in supporting this transition, and YCH is proud to support its commitment to transitioning to 100% renewable energy generation.
