Training & Development

Our Group's investment in Training and Development is one of the highest in the industry.

We administer our training programme in accordance to our yearly Total Training Plan which covers our training needs, categorised into 7 major areas, namely technical skills, machinery skills, management and supervisory skills, productivity, customer service, information technology and other skills.

We emphasise on capturing, applying and transferring knowledge across our regional operations through adoption of structured on the job training (OJT) modules, which can be customised to each operation in the region.

We have been designated as a certified OJT (On-the-Job Training) Centre by the Institute of Technical Education, Singapore. As a national model company in OJT conferred by the Productivity and Standards Board, we will be sharing some of our OJT blueprints with the industry.

We are continuously improving our training initiatives with new approaches such as:

1. Certified OJT Programme (launched by the Productivity and Standards Board)
In addition to providing our employees with on-the-job training, we are also working in partnership with Temasek Polytechnic to develop and provide classroom training on various aspects of our operations to complement the practical experience of our employees. YCH has been selected as a model company for the logistics industry in the Certified OJT program by the Productivity and Standards Board.

2. Work Redesign
Skill assessment and work redesign to move the workforce towards value-adding processes so as to improve efficiency and productivity, which will be captured as new OJT modules. As a model company appointed by the Productivity and Standards Board, our work redesign initiative will be shared with the industry.

Case Study on YCH Global Logistics: Enhancing Work Processes
YCH embarked Work Redesign to enhance productivity and responsiveness to customers. The objective was to:
- Improve the Freight structure to provide efficient and effective response to customers' needs.
- Identify and eliminate waste activities in freight processes.

YCH wanted to restructure its freight operations to make it less dependent on individuals as well as improve utilization of resources. The project team conducted a Work Redesign needs analysis to understand the complexity of the freight operation, which handles jobs according to many different specific customer requirements and country regulatory requirements. This was followed by a Job and Competency analysis, to understand current jobs and how they can be enhanced to fit into the redesigned process.

Through work redesign needs analysis, the project team identified that work assignments were mainly allocated by the customer. Although this is good in providing for a high-level customer focus, the team found that among other issues, many generic activities were duplicated. There were also several opportunities for waste elimination. Such waste came in the form of, duplicate data entry, manual duplication and creation of documents.

The redesign process involved assigning jobs according to specific groups or teams based on the complexity of the job and using Information Technology to reduce data entry and documentation.

As a result of work design, an IT system and database were developed to replace the current multi-system. This improved data extraction and reduced data entry duplication significantly. A real-time shipment document generation system was also developed to eliminate the need for manual duplication and creation of documents.

The benefits have been encouraging to the company as well as operations staff. The freight structure is now more streamlined and the IT system is more efficient than before. Productivity has improved significantly as staff are able to handle more jobs per day. The potential of the staff has also been enhanced through the Work Redesign training plan. Above all, service level has improved and the freight operation is able to provide a more efficient response to customers' needs and enquiries.

3. Training Policy
YCH recognises that what propels a company's success is the people who are contributing within the organisation. As such, we placed heavy emphasis on staff training. The training programs revolve around the corporate philosophy of RISE. Training plans are devised to train our staff in attaining maximum proficiencies in their respective work area. With a training budget that exceeds the industrial standard, we have cultivated a team of supply chain professional serving our partners with our utmost efforts.
